Core Curriculum
The Marietta Middle School 2024-2025 Course Catalog has further information on all courses offered.
Language Arts/Reading
The language arts curriculum is divided into two distinct grade levels of instruction, with sequential concepts from one grade to the next. Students are expected to learn to write both creatively and factually. They learn to read, discuss and interpret great literature. Speaking skills are developed through formal and informal projects. The ultimate purpose of this curriculum is to develop literate speakers and writers who are well prepared to succeed in the high school curriculum.
Mathematics
At Marietta Middle School, students learn how to use math to think critically and understand that there are often different ways to solve problems, with sometimes more than one correct answer. The main idea in math is that by understanding concepts and using reasoning, students can figure out new things without just memorizing facts. It's the connections between ideas that make math easier to understand. The focus of Georgia's K-12 math standards is on problem solving, reasoning, making connections, and communicating ideas clearly.
Georgia's K-12 mathematics standards focuses on actively engaging students in the development of mathematical understanding by:
- Modeling mathematically
- Describing math with a variety of representations
- Working independently
- Solving problems in cooperative groups
- Estimating and computing efficiently
- Conducting investigations and recording findings
Science
At MMS, all science classes are taught using the three-dimensional learning model that emphasizes scientific inquiry. In seventh grade, students focus on life science, studying living things, including how they're built, interact, and change over time. Eighth grade introduces physical science, exploring concepts like motion, energy, and the properties of matter. Advanced 8th-grade students can earn high school science credit by delving deeper into these physical science concepts, such as atomic structure, waves, and electromagnetism. This advanced course utilizes the IB MYP Design Cycle and high-school-level resources.
Social Studies
In the seventh grade curriculum, students continue the application of map skills learned in the sixth grade. Students also continue the study of World Geography, concentrating primarily on Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Eighth grade social studies classes currently focus on Georgia history; and some aspects of United States history.
World Languages
The World Languages department offers students the opportunity to explore and develop proficiency in two of the most widely spoken languages in the world-French and Spanish. Through engaging lessons in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students will gain a deep understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and cultural nuances. These courses emphasize real-world communication skills, encouraging students to use the languages in everyday situations while also exploring the rich history, traditions, and contemporary issues of French- and Spanish-speaking countries. By the end of the course, students will have the tools to communicate, preparing them for global citizenship and future opportunities.
