| MCS Kaleidoscope Choral Concert, May 7 ![]() Over 300 chorus students from Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (Kenneth Grant, director), Marietta Middle School (Sabrina Robertson, director), and Marietta High School (Michael Zauchin, director) collaborated for "Kaleidoscope" spring choral concert. Kaleidoscope continues a choral tradition that allows students to experience the artistry of choral music on all secondary levels. MMS Band Disney Magic Music Days Performance, May 5 ![]() Fifty-nine Marietta Middle School (MMS) Band students recently participated in the "Disney Magic Music Days". The MMS Band performed a 25-minute concert in Downtown Disney's Waterside Amphitheater. The performance was attended by hundreds of Disney guests MMS Students Win ASCE "What DO Civil Engineer's Do?" Contest, April 19 ![]() Congratulations! Praveen Doluweera, Dhranashree Arivalagan, and Jackson Daigle have been selected as the Marietta Middle School (MMS) first place winners of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) "What DO civil engineers do?" contest. Contest winners will receive their awards at the ASCE Georgia Section luncheon meeting on May 3, 2013. MMS Club H.O.P.E. Celebrates National Nutrition Month, April 5 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) Club H.O.P.E. students celebrated National Nutrition Month at Flying Biscuit. In March, Club H.O.P.E. partnered with the Marietta City Schools Nutrition Program to offer various mini-lessons to students about nutrition. Each lesson focused on healthy eating habits and a healthy lifestyle. Employee of the Month ![]() Mary Ellen Mayer, a Social Studies and English Language MILE Teacher at Marietta Middle School, was named the April 2013 Employee of the Month. Mary has truly added value by offering engaging and challenging student lessons, and always goes above and beyond in the classroom. She teaches a FLEX class that helps recover a failing grade in English Language Arts. Although the students are not her regular students, she goes the extra mile by contacting their parents, checking attendance when they are absent and providing individual instruction so that these students are able to be successful. Not only does Mary go above and beyond in the classroom, she is always available to help her colleagues by answering questions, making sure they receive school communications and checking in on them to make sure everything is going okay. Mary Ellen’s peers at Marietta Middle School have this to say, “Mary Ellen is a wonderful addition to our school, the ELA department, and to lives of our students.” MMS CPR Training, March 2013 ![]() During the last week of March, Marietta Middle School (MMS) students received Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training from school nurse Elin Mazloom The use of CPR dates all the way back to 1740, yet even today, most Americans don't know how to perform it. Given properly and immediately to sudden cardiac arrest victims, CPR can save lives. MMS Bands Earn Excellent & Superior Ratings - District XII LGPE, March 13 & 27 ![]() The Marietta Middle School (MMS) 7th grade band recently earned an Excellent Rating in Performance and a Superior Rating in Sight-Reading at the District XII Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE). The 8th grade band earned Superior ratings in performance and a Superior rating in Sight-Reading at their evaluations. The superior rating is the highest rating a band can achieve. MMS Science Day @ Georgia Tech, March 9 ![]() Four Marietta Middle School (MMS) students recently participated in Georgia Tech's Middle School Outreach Program Science Day held in the Van Leer Engineering and Computing Building on the college's Atlanta campus. Seventh graders Alexia Figueras, Chloe Lawson, Colbie Lawson and Harris Roach investigated the world of science, math and technology with college professors, students and Siemens' Corporation volunteers. Activities icluded hands-on experiments, and panel discussions about the role of women in engineering. MMMS Club H.O.P.E., March 13 ![]() Shane Hatfield, professional BMX biker and Gary Daniels, professional boxer, recently visited with Marietta Middle School (MMS) students and stressed the importance of proper sports training. Daniels uses a variety of techniques to train, but primarily uses the jump rope for endurance, balance, and speed training. MMS Club H.O.P.E. trains every Tuesday and Thursday with Jump-10 using ropes to practice with speed, agility, and tricks to help combat childhood obesity. MMS Club H.O.P.E. "Pause For A Cause", March 8 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) Club H.O.P.E. students "Pause-4-A-Cause" and explore the Bodies Exhibit at Atlantic Station that celebrates health and wellness. Students listened to docents and used informational texts to explore and analyze human body systems, and they examined the adverse effects of unhealthy living while renewing their commitment to making healthy lifestyle choices. MMS High Museum Field Trip, March 8 ![]() The Marietta Middle School (MMS) Art and Drama departments recently sponsored a field trip to the High Museum of Art to see the Frida Kahlo/Diego Rivera Exhibit. Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Drawing featured more than 120 paintings and drawings and included an important group of photographs by artists who captured the couple's shared passion for each other and for Mexico's revolutionary culture during the 1920's and 1930's. In addition to the exhibit, Andrew Solomonson the High’s Art Access Coordinator invited MMS students to participate in an interactive narrative. MMS Student Competes - National Geographic State Geography Bee, April 5 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) student William Hettrich has qualified to represent MMS at the National Geographic State Geography Bee to be held Friday, April 5, 2013, at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville. One winner will advance to the national competition, which will be held May 20-22 in Washington, D.C. Ndubuisi and Marietta High School(MHS) band student Nick Cheater for their selection to the All State Band! Both students make us proud and recently represented Marietta City Schools in Savannah the first weekend of March. MHS Rising Blue Devil Mentor Program, March 1 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) students recently visited Marietta High School (MHS) to participate in the Rising Blue Devil Mentor Program. An initiative developed to support the transition of eighth graders to high school, the Rising Blue Devil Mentor Program, allowing students to build a relationship with a student mentor to reduce the anxiety often experienced at the onset of high school. During the recent visit, MMS students engaged in group activities designed to provide an overview of the high school and experience the MHS Blue Devil culture. |
MMS Students Perform GMEA All-State Chorus, Feb. 21 -23![]() ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) students, Mayon Clayton, Michael Simmond, and Brennyn Shelton, successfully passed their All-State Chorus auditions, and participated in the annual Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) All-State Chorus event in Savannah, GA. The choral performances were an outstanding representation of superior musicianship and inspirational singing. Congratulations! MMS Family Night, Feb. 12 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) recently hosted “MMS Family Night”. A panel of school administrators, teachers, counselors, a school police officer, an attorney, and former middle school students fielded questions from parents and students regarding the “Social Scene” at MMS and academic expectations, and how the two are intertwined. “MMS Family Night” enjoyed the highest attendance rate of the parent engagement programs hosted by the school this year, and parents expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to interact with school leaders in such an intimate setting. MMS Green Team Recycling Program, 1st Semester 2012 ![]() Recently the Marietta Middle School (MMS) Green Team donated an assortment of 72 paint brushes to the 7th and 8th grades Art Department, and three basketballs to the Physical Education Department. The MMS Green Team oversee the school recycling program. With money earned from their recycling efforts the team purchases supplies for teachers and students. MSGA/MMS Students Place 1st /2nd: Cobb-Paulding Regional Science Fair, Feb. 2 ![]() Marietta Sixth Grade Academy (MSGA) and Marietta Middle School (MMS) students placed at the recent Cobb-Paulding Regional Science Fair. MMS Earns Awards Future City Competition, Jan. 26 ![]() In their second year competing, Marietta Middle School (MMS) received two awards in the 2013 Georgia Future City Competition. MMS earned awards for Best Transportation System and Most Innovative Design of Infrastructure. The annual Future City competition encourages middle school students nationwide to develop their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This year, 29 schools and more than 85 teams participated in the Georgia regional competition. Teams were judged on presentation skills, virtual city design, physical model, research essay, and city narrative. MMS Holiday Entertainment, Dec. 19 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) Theatre students recently sang holiday classics including Jingle Bells, Feliz Navidad, Silent Night, and 12 Days of Christmas for MMS Partners in Education: Bank of North Georgia and Stevi B's Pizza. Students also read Dr. Clement Clarke Moore’s holiday poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." MMS Choral Governor’s Holiday Tour Performance, Dec. 17 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) Choral Singers, directed by Sabrina Robertson, recently performed holiday songs at Governor Deal's Mansion. The students were greeted by First Lady Sandra Deal and performed for local and out of town visitors. MMS Southern Museum Field Trip, Dec. 11 -12 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) 8th grade students recently visited the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw. The students explored the permanent exhibits and learned about the strategic and economic importance of railroads during the Civil War and afterwards. The also learned about the Great Locomotive Chase and walked through a reconstruction of an early 20th century belt-driven locomotive assembly line. MMS Storytellers Visit West Side, Nov. 16 ![]() The Marietta Middle School (MMS) Storytellers club recently visited West Side Elementary to read Dr. Seuss stories to first graders, and they presented the West Side library with a copy of Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” MMS students support literacy as part of their Middle Years Program community outreach activities. Club H.O.P.E lined the sidewalks as the MMS band played several fight songs, including the chant-worthy “Go Marietta,” to pump up the crowd. All participants, including MMS administrators and staff waved and cheered as the buses drove away. Seoul Women University Student Delegates Visit MMS, Oct. 31 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) recently hosted the annual campus site visit of student delegates from Seoul’s Women University. The visiting students presented a report describing their education in Korea, visited MMS classrooms, and spoke with students. This visit is part of the studies exchange agreement between Cobb County and sister-city Seongdong-gu, Korea. The goal is to promote interdisciplinary global learning at KSU and in P-12 public schools. MMS Celebrates National School Bus Safety, Oct. 26 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) recently celebrated National School Bus Safety Week, a public education program designed to promote school bus safety. Students, staff, teachers, administration, and parents joined forces to celebrate and show appreciation to all school bus operators and officials for their dedication and commitment to safety in our community. MMS Scary School Tour, Oct. 20 ![]() From creative to artistic, students and teachers enjoyed decorating the 400 building at Marietta Middle School (MMS) for the Scary School community event. Visitors were escorted through the building inhabited by MMS drama students and teachers as they demonstrated mastery in different forms of expressions. MMS Achieves Marietta Reads! AR Goals, Oct. 24 Marietta Reads! is going strong at Marietta Middle School (MMS). Our student readers have earned over 16,000 Accelerated Reader (AR) points toward our year-end goal. At the end of the first quarter two MMS students selected from the top five AR point earners in each grade won an iPod Shuffle.MMS Cookie Dough Fundraiser Reward, Oct. 16 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) students recently enjoyed a special treat for selling 18 or more items during this year’s Cookie Dough Fundraiser. Students were chauffeured by limo to Yogli Mogli (Dallas Highway) where everyone enjoyed a special treat! MMS Spirit Week, Oct. 15 - 19 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) recently celebrated Spirit Week. Students and teachers participated in the school pep rally and the seventh grade class won the spirit stick. Kennedy Vaughn and Justin Denny were recognized for their dedication to school spirit. MMS Band Performance - Partner in Education, Oct. 15 ![]() Marietta Middle School (MMS) band students recently performed at MMS Partner in Education, Chick-fil-A (Dallas Highway) for MMS Spirit Night. Students entertained family and guests while everyone enjoyed dinner. Student of the Month ![]() Charles Winsor, a seventh grader at Marietta Middle School, was named the September 2012 Student of the Month. Charles is a student who thinks critically and makes an effort to apply classroom content to real-world situations, and he consistently contributes to classroom discussions with thoughtful, insightful answers. He is also a member of the 7th grade football team. |
